In February, Canadian missionaries with farming backgrounds, Fay Dietrich and Sylvia Walters helped us to organise, implement and oversee the works needed on the farm.
The vision is that the land will supply fruit and vegetables that the family needs as well as having a surplus to sell. It will also provide training and work opportunities for the young people once schooling is finished and can be used as a training model for the local community.
During their time here the ground was cleared of shrub, the rocks removed and the land ploughed. Fay drew up a planting plan and allocated an area to be fenced off for future cattle to graze. Tools were bought and planting started in 10×10 foot squares. Some of the older boys were shown how to plant the seeds, beans, tomatoes, parsnips, lettuce and corn.
The farm garden is currently being hand watered which is a huge challenge not practical on a longer term so we are so grateful when God sends rain.
After a long wait, Blue Ridge Company is currently on site digging the well and as we write, the wall has been completed around the farm, and the gates are being made. This protects future crops from wild animals. Thank you to all the organizations and individuals who have supported the well being dug and the building of the wall.
A priority list has been also drawn up of what is needed on the Farm to move forward:
Can you join with us in prayer for the farm, please? If you would like to contribute towards this, or to organise a fundraising event to help us on this, please, get in touch.
Anyone who has travelled as a mission trip volunteer knows well how life changing it can be. The person who travels receives much more than expected but the aim is always to serve and empower people in need. Several trips have been made during the past few months.
In January, a medical team from the UK ran six clinics at Hope Christian Academy, seeing an estimate of 650 children and a clinic at the local church with a further 70 people from the community. All school children had their eye tested, were weighed, measured and growth plotted on their medical records.
As a result of this:
As one of the volunteers stated, “as this medical trip is now into its third year, it was very rewarding to see the positive changes that have been made following on from the previous clinics. One example of this was a young boy for whom I was plotting a growth chart. In 2016, he was underweight and his family was identified to Yvrose as people who would benefit from additional food supplies. This year his weight is now proportional to his height; one example of the success achieved.”
We couldn’t have completed all this Medical work without the hardworking volunteers and the invaluable LATA and Cuckfield and Lindfield Rotary Club (England) collaboration. They supported us with the translators (vital for doing the clinics) and the medicines, respectively.
In February, an UK drama team built confidence and skills with the young people producing a musical version of Ruth, which included over 60 hand-made costumes for each performer. For most it was the first time acting. They embraced learning their lines, songs and parts with enthusiasm. Parents were astonished and very proud of their performance.
In March we also had The Project Haiti team of 35 medical students from The University of Florida, based at Haitian Christian Mission. They delivered dental care to the kindergarten children, coated the children’s teeth and identified any that needed further dental care.
We want to thank all the volunteers and organisations who contributed in different ways with such a passion and servant heart.
Between 3 and 5 million people have been affected in different ways, with many thousands of homes and infrastructures damaged or destroyed and crops and live-stock lost.
Hope House Haiti is working within local communities providing food, clean water and shelter.
Please, pray for Haiti and if you would like to support our efforts in helping families rebuild their lives, please donate what you can. 100% of funds raised will go directly to this need.
Please reference your giving to the relief effort – hurricane.
