Students
In February 2022, eight graduates from Hope Christian Academy were all awarded scholarships to study at University Espoir, a ministry of Calvary Chapel based in Port-au-Prince. Back in 2010 we could never have imagined that some of the orphaned and abandoned children would graduate from High School and be offered places at University. Yet 6 young men and 2 women led the way, showing incredible resilience and determination in the most challenging of circumstances, overcoming poverty, political unrest, repeated school closures, and then the Covid pandemic in order to achieve their dream.

Our vision from the outset was to 'inspire kids to be world changers', and having Hope Christian Academy graduates achieve places at University was a massive step towards seeing that vision become a reality. With a university degree, they can go on to be the leaders that Haiti so desperately needs, and may even help lift Haiti out of the poverty, corruption and moral failure that has led to so many problems in recent years. So in March 2022 we started a Student Fund in order to provide each student with a laptop and to cover their board and lodging whilst at University. Thanks to your generosity, we quickly raised sufficient funds to purchase laptops and support the initial 8 students through their time at University. The increasing violence and unrest in Port au Prince ultimately meant the students could no longer travel into Port au Prince and had to undertake their studies by linking into the University remotely. Nevertheless they all persevered, and we expect all of them to have graduated by the end of 2025.
Cherestal Rogener, the Secondary School Maths and Science teacher and individual responsible for teacher training and development in the school (Pedagogy), helps to prepare the graduates for University and and support them through their studies. We contacted him to thank him for all he has done, and he sent us this reply:
"Thank God, he gives me health. Our country is in trouble, thank God for your support. Because it would be more difficult if you did not meet our needs. Once again thank God for you" |
In the autumn of 2024 a further 10 Hope Christian Academy graduates started at a University in the North of Haiti. This University was chosen as it is away from the worst of the violence, although travel to the University was difficult as they had to go via the mountains to get around Port-au-Prince. But they all arrived safely and are now living in a rented house close to the University, where they will remain for the duration of their studies.
